The problems with the game's original set up lead to its reinvention along the same basic lines, still allowing a depth of game play but avoiding some of the more complex rules and concepts. The standard card types and game play would remain, allowing some new cards to be used with the original cards. These were known as backward-compatible cards, or First Edition Compatible (abbreviated as 1EC). Of course there was an element of attempting to satisfy longstanding fans of the original game with this 'compromise'. These cards are able to be used in 1E game play, though some key words need to be changed to fit 1E's old rules and setup. However, many cards central to the new form of the game can only conform to the new rules and setup. Second Edition, commonly abbreviated 2E, was launched in 2002, and ended with its final expansion in December, 2007.

Because the game was essentially starting from scratch but with the hindsight of seven years' work (now that's oxymoronic!), the initial Second Edition set was able to progress quickly. As a result, six affiliations debuted in that set compared to three for 1E. The focus of the 2E sets has been on characters and situations in The Next Generation and Deep Space Nine, though 'supporting' cards have images and concepts drawn from every part of the Star Trek universe.

Furthermore, the scope of each card type could be realised in the early planning and a permanent seven card types were created: Dilemmas; Equipment; Events; Interrupts; Missions; Personnel, and Ships. Decks would consist of five missions, at least twenty dilemmas in a dilemma pile and at least thirty-five cards made up of the other five card types.

First Edition

What is now known as First Edition (commonly abbreviated "1E" among players) is the original conception of the game. Initially licensed only to cover Star Trek: The Next Generation TV Show, the first three card sets were limited to that show's universe. Consequentially, the only affiliations created were the Federation, Klingons, and Romulans, plus a group for other cards that didn't fit into the three main affiliations called Non-Aligned. This narrow scope had little attraction for players.

In 1997, Decipher announced that a wider scope had now been licensed for the game. Three further TV Series, Deep Space 9, Voyager and The Next Generation would soon be depicted in new cards. Accordingly, the game's name was shortened to The Star Trek Customizable Card Game. Then a set from a film - First Contact arrived later that year, which introduced the Borg affiliation, among other new concepts.

This was soon followed by several sets based on situations in Deep Space 9. These introduced further affiliations for the Bajorans, Cardassians, Dominion, and Ferengi, along with enhanced systems for battling and capturing. These expansion sets are generally considered to be the 'golden age' of First Edition.

Two more sets featuring cards depicting the Original Series came next (as that title was added to the license), followed by sets drawing heavily on Voyager which introduced the new, but smaller Kazon, Vidiian, and Hirogen affiliations. It was after this that the game began a serious decline in popularity and sales.

Middle Earth Collectable Card Game (MECCG) is a collectable card game which was first released by Iron Crown Enterprises in late 1995. It is the first CCG based on J.R.R. Tolkien's fictional universe of Middle Earth, with added content from ICE's Middle Earth Role Playing Game. MECCG's life was a short one, running until 1999 when ICE lost the rights to use the content. In the time that the game was current, there were 3 basic sets, The Wizards (METW); The Lidless Eye (MELE) and The White Hand (MEWH). The Wizards set was followed by The Dragons (METD) and Dark Minions (MEDM) and The Lidless Eye by Against the Shadow (MEAS).

Towards the turn of the Millennium, things began to hot up wrt the production of Peter Jackson's film trilogy - including bidding one supposes on rights to things such as trading card games. Subsequently ICE lost the rights to produce anymore card sets, so The Balrog (MEBA) and Middle Earth Challenge Decks (MECD) were the final sets, produced in 1998. ICE were probably in the right place at the wrong time with the Middle Earth CCG, which is a shame since many of the artists they used, for example, Angus McBride, were stalwarts of previous printed Tolkein works and went on to work on Jackson's film versions.

Lord of The Rings TCG

The Lord of the Rings Trading Card Game (LOTR TCG) is a collectable card game produced by the US Company Decipher. It was released November 2001 and is based on Peter Jackson's The Lord of the Rings movie trilogy and the Tolkien trilogy on which the films were based. Decipher also have the rights to The Hobbit novel but have not yet released any cards based on it.

The beginning of the end for the LOTR CCG came in November 2004 when with the new base set, Shadows, the decision was made not to foil every card. Instead, each expansion would only have eighteen pre-selected rare foil cards that would be randomly inserted now into one in every seven booster packs. Shadows also had four, rather than two, different starter decks. In a positive move, the material used for the cards would also now cover the original novels instead of being limited purely to the film releases.

At the same time, a system of rotation was announced. From March 2005 the entire Fellowship block ceased to be legal for use in the Standard tournament format. Then it was proposed, each November the oldest block remaining would be 'rotated out'. The makers claimed this would help keep the card pool down to a manageable size. Of course detractors claimed this was nothing but money grabbing and didn't like being forced to purchase what they deemed to be inferior cards.

Finally, the seven month delay of the The Hunters expansion release (from November 2005 to June 2006) saw the game suffer a significant drop in popularity amongst its players. Furthermore, Decipher then decided to remove the expansions The Great Eye and Shelob's Lair from its intended expansion. Following the release of the final expansion Age's End in June 2007 the game was discontinued.

Arabian Nights

Released in December 1993, Arabian Nights was the fourth MTG Set and the first Expansion Set. It was also the first set to feature completely new cards. With just 92 cards the set is the smallest of all the MTG Sets. 21 are common cards and 57 are un-commons. Those of you quick with the old addition, will notice that this makes a total of just 78 cards. This is because 14 of the common cards were printed in two variations, known by their codenames, 'a' and 'b'. Eleven of the twelve commons, which have generic mana in their mana costs appear in two versions - one light the other dark (Desert Nomads is the exception). Then a further three other commons, i.e. Hasran Ogress, Nafs Asp, and Stone Throwing Devils were printed with very slightly different coloured mana symbols.

The Set is based upon the story of Thousand and One Arabian Nights - indeed it is the only set to use earthbound mythology for its background story although several other sets are inspired by other earthbound myths as well. Four cards are considered notable, these being Shahrazad, Juzam Djinn, Bazaar of Baghdad and Library of Alexandria.

Limited Edition Alpha

Limited Edition Alpha was the first Magic: The Gathering Card Set. Released in August 1993, it soon sold out its initial print run of 2.6M. WoTC and the game's inventor Richard Garfield must have been, ahem, pleasantly surprised. Within 2 months, the Limited Edition Beta Set was released - more of which can be found here.

Alpha contains a total of 295 cards, with 74 commons; 94 un-commons; 116 rares and 10 basic land cards. There is perhaps an air of Alpha having been released as a work in progress. For example it contains numerous misprints - a total of 10 cards were corrected with the release of Beta. The Set is notable for being one of only three which include the Power Nine. Nine cards so powerful that they are restricted in tournament play. They are: Black Lotus; Mox Pearl; Mox Sapphire; Mox Jet; Mox Ruby; Mox Emerald; Ancestral Recall; Time Walk; and Timetwister.

Finally, you should note the Chaos Orb card. This is a card which requires manual dexterity to play, given that it is played by dropping it onto the play area. Depending upon which cards it touches, those cards are destroyed (as is the Chaos Orb). Play it wisely...

Sets not legal for tournament play

These sets, although produced by WoTC are not sanctioned for use in Official Tournaments. That is tournaments sanctioned by the DCI - Duelists Convocation International. The DCI is the official sanctioning body for play in Magic: The Gathering, providing game rules, tournament operating procedures, and other materials to private tournament organizers and players. It also operates a judge certification program to provide consistent rules enforcement and promote fair play.
